Lime Plastering

Introduction to Lime Plastering Course is scheduled for Friday & Saturday, 16th and 17th April, 2010.
The two day course aims to provide building professionals with an in-depth look at materials and techniques involved in using traditional lime plastering and its importance when repairing and conserving old and historic properties.

Marianne, with Anthony Goode assisting, describes in detail the importance of achieving a good consistent mix, especially the particle consistency of sand, air and lime.

Chestnut riven lathes are fitted into position on a Georgian Oak ceiling in preparation for plastering (below left). Alternatives to lath and plaster are rush(middle) or reed matting (right), matting being the modern alternative.

Geoff Orton starts to create a run plaster cornice. Initially he applies the backing hair and lime in preparation for the Plaster of Paris (left).
The completed cornice (centre) is a magnificent display of skill.
An arch - completely hand drawn (right).

Anthony Goode demonstrates re-pointing, removing old lime mortar and reapplying a mix of lime and sand appropriate for a Georgian wall (left).
Geoff demonstrates the application of backing lime mortar (centre).
Geoff and Anthony show delegates how to prepare fat lime for the finishing coats (right).

Wheathills will be hosting this very popular event again on 16th and 17th of April 2010.
