Wheathills is
hosting a series of courses on The Repair Of Old Houses
in conjunction with SPAB and featuring BBC2 presenter
Marianne Suhr.
Introduction to Lime
Plastering Course is scheduled for Friday & Saturday,
4th and 5th April, 2008.
The two day course aims to provide building
professionals with an in-depth look at materials and
techniques involved in using traditional lime plastering
and its importance when repairing and conserving old
and historic properties.

Marianne, with
Anthony Goode assisting, describes in detail the
importance of achieving a good consistent mix, especially
the particle consistency of sand, air and lime. |
Chestnut riven lathes are fitted into position on a Georgian
Oak ceiling in preparation for plastering (below left).
Alternatives to lath and plaster are rush(middle) or reed
matting (right), matting being the modern alternative.
Geoff Orton starts to create a run plaster cornice. Initially
he applies the backing hair and lime in preparation for
the Plaster of Paris (left).
The completed cornice (centre) is
a magnificent display of skill.

Anthony Goode demonstrates re-pointing, removing old lime
mortar and reapplying a mix of lime and sand appropriate
for a Georgian wall (left).
Geoff demonstrates the application of backing lime mortar
