Introducing
traditional skills to the next generation.

Wheathills, in
conjunction with
local Ecclesbourne School, are helping a new generation
gain a taste for Antique Restoration & Conservation
Wheathills is working closely with
Ecclesbourne School to develop year
11 students’ awareness and understanding of traditional
restoration
and conservation. The initiative aims to give 6 children
‘hands-on’
experience in the workshops of Wheathills over a six
week period .
The idea for the ‘work experience’ was first
developed by Ecclesbourne school technology teacher
John Minton, who for over 4 years has supported our
OPEN WEEKENDS. He is now working in partnership with
Wheathills to help students improve their knowledge,
understanding and appreciation of antique restoration,
traditional construction techniques and country crafts
whilst working alongside professional artisans.
Whilst the students are at Wheathills they will learn
amongst other things, Traditional French Polishing,
Traditional Cabinet Making and Upholstery using traditional
tacks and horsehair.
The children will also take part in other activities outside
Wheathills as part of the programme. It will see them visit a
construction site and a tour around a local National Trust
property, with the hope they feel inspired to pursue a career in
conservation in the future.
