Study In Traditional Upholstery

Bergére
Suite
The Victorian Bergere suite, designed in the Carolean
style, was in a poor condition and required extensive restoration
and complete re-upholstering in the traditional manner.
The existing re-upholstery covered interesting carvings
of cherubs, all of which were completely hidden from view
as a result of the insensitive covering. Once removed the
carvings could be properly enjoyed although a number needed
minor restoration and repair.

Overall the project involved repairing
missing and damaged caning; with the seat requiring complete
removal before being re-upholstered in separate "pockets",
which allowed it to move independently to the frame. The
benefit of which prevents the fabric at the front being
pulled or torn when being used.
As with the majority of re-upholstery projects at Wheathills
the seats were completed to the calico stage, all traditionally
completed by hand including the bolsters, which were hand
sewn in the traditional manner with each front finished
with a rosette. The client sourced the covering fabric,
before being applied in our workshops.
